Field Marshal Lord Kitchener inspecting the 10th Battalion

5920252 Field Marshal Lord Kitchener inspecting the 10th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment at Halton, 1914 (oil on canvas) by Jamieson, Alexander (1873-1937); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Field Marshal Lord Kitchener inspecting the 10th Battalion, The York and Lancaster Regiment in camp at Halton, Buckinghamshire, 1914.
Oil on canvas by Alexander Jamieson (1873-1937), 1914.
The 10th (Service) Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, was formed at Pontefract, Yorkshire in September 1914 as part of Lord Kitcheners New Army. Service battalions were formed especially for service during the First World War (1914-1918) and were disbanded at the conclusion of hostilities. Since conscription was not introduced until 1916, their members would all have been volunteers. This battalion was stationed at Halton until August 1915, whilst undergoing training. It saw action at the Battles of Loos (25 September-14 October 1915), the Somme (24 June-13 November 1916) and Arras (9-15 April 1917), and was eventually disbanded in February 1918.
The artist, Jamieson, served with the 10th (Service) Battalion with the temporary rank of second lieutenant from January 1915, and was quartermaster with the honorary rank of lieutenant from May 1915. In January 1918, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps.); eNational Army Museum; Scottish, out of copyright

Field Marshal Lord Kitchener Inspiring the 10th Battalion - A Glimpse into History

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history as Field Marshal Lord Kitchener inspects the 10th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment at Halton in 1914. Painted by Alexander Jamieson, this oil on canvas artwork vividly portrays the scene with remarkable detail. The 10th (Service) Battalion was formed as part of Lord Kitchener's New Army, a force created during World War I for voluntary service. Stationed at Halton until August 1915, this battalion underwent rigorous training before being deployed to various battlefields. Their dedication and bravery were tested in major conflicts such as Loos, Somme, and Arras. Jamieson himself served with the 10th (Service) Battalion and played an important role within its ranks. Starting as a second lieutenant in January 1915, he later became quartermaster with the honorary rank of lieutenant from May that same year. In January 1918, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. This print not only showcases an iconic military figure inspecting his troops but also provides insight into the experiences of soldiers during World War I. It serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice and commitment to duty. Displayed at London's National Army Museum today, this painting is a testament to both historical significance and artistic talent. Its preservation allows us to reflect upon our past while honoring those who fought bravely for their country.
