Major-General Sir Frederick RobertsA Kabul Field Force spent the winter of 1879-80 besieged at Sherpur cantonment by vastly superior numbers of Afghans. The cantonment was located about a mile north of Kabul city. This view of it depicts the 2000 metre high Sher Dirwaza in the distance.

This print showcases the Sherpur cantonment in 1879 during the Second Afghan War. The image, taken by an unknown photographer from the 19th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The Sherpur cantonment served as a temporary home for Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts and his Kabul Field Force during their winter encampment of 1879-80. Despite being vastly outnumbered by Afghan forces, they bravely held their ground within this fortified camp located just north of Kabul city. In this particular photograph, we are presented with a breathtaking view of the Sher Dirwaza standing tall in the distance.
