EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The spotted Greenland Dove, 1749-73" transports us back to a time when the art of illustration and natural history were intricately intertwined. Created by George Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German artist and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann's expertise shines through as he combines Edwards' original engravings with the work of Mark Catesby in "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". In this collaborative effort, Seligmann translates the names into German while adding additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The result is a mesmerizing composition that showcases the beauty of nature. The spotted Greenland Dove takes center stage with its delicate feathers meticulously depicted. Every intricate detail comes to life under Seligmann's skilled hand. As we gaze upon this artwork now housed in a private collection, we are reminded of the significance these illustrations held during their time. They served as valuable educational tools for those seeking knowledge about birds and animals from distant lands. Today, this print continues to captivate viewers with its historical charm and artistic excellence. It stands as a testament to both Edwards' pioneering work in ornithology and Seligmann's talent for breathing new life into these remarkable engravings.
