EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The small black and white Divers, 1749-73" transports us back to the enchanting world of natural history. Created by George Edwards in collaboration with Michael Seligmann, this coloured engraving showcases the exquisite beauty of uncommon birds. Originally engraved by Edwards for his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History". Seligmann took on the task of re-engraving these plates. In a unique twist, he combined Edwards' work with that of Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". This fusion resulted in a masterpiece that not only translated names into German but also added additional figures and plants absent from the original illustrations. The image before us depicts Mergulus melanoleucos, commonly known as divers or sea parrots. The sharpness and brevity of their beaks are highlighted in this illustration, showcasing both male and female specimens. Their contrasting black-and-white plumage adds an element of elegance to their already fascinating appearance. As we delve into this mesmerizing artwork, we are reminded once again why nature has always been a subject that captivates our imagination. Through intricate engravings like these, we can appreciate the diversity and wonder present within our natural world.
