EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The red-throated Ducker or Loon, 1749-73" transports us back to the era of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. The print showcases the exquisite artistry of Seligmann, a renowned German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his works on uncommon birds, this particular piece was re-engraved by Seligmann. He combined Edwards' plates with Catesby's work on Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. In doing so, he not only translated the names into German but also added some unique figures and plants that were absent in the original illustrations. The focal point of this illustration is undoubtedly the red-throated Ducker or Loon (Colymbus caudatus gutture rubro). Its vibrant plumage stands out against a serene backdrop depicting nature's beauty. This bird species has long fascinated naturalists due to its distinctive appearance and remarkable diving abilities. As we admire this artwork from a private collection now made accessible through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, we are reminded of our deep connection with nature's wonders. This print serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with animals and their place within our shared history. Whether you are an avid bird enthusiast or simply appreciate fine art, this enchanting engraving offers a glimpse into both scientific exploration and artistic expression during an era when these disciplines intertwined seamlessly.
