EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The red-bellied Woodpecker. The hairy Woodpecker. 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of Mark Catesby and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by George Edwards, this print combines the works of these talented individuals to create a stunning piece that captures the beauty of nature. The image features two woodpeckers, one with a vibrant red belly and another with a strikingly hairy appearance. These birds are depicted in intricate detail, showcasing their unique characteristics and plumage patterns. The delicate lines and rich colors bring these creatures to life on paper. Seligmann, a German engraver and illustrator, re-engraved the plates originally created by Edwards for his works on uncommon birds. He then merged them with Catesby's renowned work on Carolina's natural history, adding his own touch by translating names into German and including additional figures and plants not found in the originals. This print is part of a private collection but has been made available through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen for public appreciation. It serves as both an educational tool for studying bird species and an artistic masterpiece that celebrates the wonders of our natural world. With its meticulous attention to detail and historical significance, this coloured engraving exemplifies the intersection between science, artistry, and preservation of knowledge throughout history.
