EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving, titled "The Cock Padda or Rice-Bird" transports us back to the 18th century world of natural history. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a fusion of two renowned works - Edwards' "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Intricately detailed, the image showcases a male Coccothraustes sinensis cinereus perched on a branch. Commonly known as the Rice-Bird or Cock Padda, this Chinese bird exudes elegance with its vibrant plumage and distinctive features. The artist has masterfully captured every feather and contour, bringing life to this exquisite creature. Seligmann's contribution to this print goes beyond translation; he adds his own touch by incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original works. This collaboration between two talented artists results in a harmonious blend that celebrates nature's diversity. Displayed in a private collection today, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its beauty and historical significance. It serves as a testament to humanity's fascination with the natural world throughout centuries. As we gaze upon this enchanting illustration, we are reminded of our connection to nature and how it has inspired artists across generations. Through their artistry, they invite us into their world where birds soar freely amidst lush landscapes – an eternal reminder of Earth's boundless
