EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The ash-coloured Buzzard" a stunning coloured engraving created by George Edwards in 1749-73. The artwork, now part of a private collection, is an exquisite example of natural history illustration. Originally engraved by Edwards himself for his works on uncommon birds and natural history, this particular print was later re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg, combined Edwards' plates with the work of Mark Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". In doing so, he translated the names into German and added additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. "The ash-coloured Buzzard" depicted in this print belongs to the Buteo cinereus species. Its elegant appearance is beautifully captured through intricate details and vibrant colours. This artwork serves as both a scientific record and an artistic masterpiece that highlights the beauty found within nature. Displayed by ePurix Verlag Volker Christen under English copyright laws (out of copyright), this print offers viewers a glimpse into the world of birds, animals, and natural history. It is a testament to the skillful craftsmanship of both George Edwards and Michael Seligmann while also celebrating their contributions to ornithology illustration.
