7337878 George Legge, 1st Lord Dartmouth (1648-1691), 17th century (oil painting) by Unknown Artist, (17th century); 68.6x54.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: unknown
A half-length portrait facing right. George Legge wears armour, lace cravat and a brown full bottom wig. Having attained a command at a very early age, in 1667 he distinguished himself in the actions of the Third Dutch War, first in command of the 'Fairfax' and afterwards the 'Royal Katherine'. After England decided Tangier was too expensive to maintain, in 1683 Dartmouth was given command of the expedition to remove the garrison and destroy the defences. This he accomplished with skill in difficult circumstances. As a close friend of James II he superseded Sir Roger Strickland as commander-in-chief on the eve of the Revolution, but was prevented by the weather from intercepting William's invading fleet. Eventually he saw the hopelessness of James's position and surrendered the fleet to William. Nevertheless he was arrested and died in the Tower.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print captures the essence of George Legge, 1st Lord Dartmouth, a prominent figure in the 17th century. The unknown artist skillfully depicts Lord Dartmouth in his full regalia, wearing armor, a lace cravat, and a distinguished brown wig. His gaze is fixed to the right, exuding confidence and authority.
Lord Dartmouth's military prowess is evident in this painting, as he rose through the ranks at a young age and proved himself in various battles during the Third Dutch War. His leadership skills were further showcased when he successfully led an expedition to remove the garrison at Tangier in 1683.
A close friend of James II, Lord Dartmouth found himself on the opposing side during the Revolution. Despite surrendering his fleet to William of Orange after realizing James's position was untenable, he was arrested and ultimately died in the Tower.
This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Lord Dartmouth's complex life and career - from his early military successes to his loyalty to James II and eventual downfall. It is a testament to both his strength as a leader and the turbulent political climate of 17th-century England.
