The Outlaw, 1861 (oil on canvas)

2636063 The Outlaw, 1861 (oil on canvas) by Windus, William Lindsay (1822-1907); 36x34 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: Lush wooded landscape seen from a high viewpoint: a sloped meadow with dense woodland in the background, with two figures hidden within scrub in the centre foreground. The figures are a woman cradling the head of an injured man: the woman, in Medieval-style dress, leans forward over the man with a protective gesture, wrapping her left arm around his head, supporting his back with her right arm, and turning her head to one side with an apprehensive expression on her face; the man, largely obscured by his companion, has an arrow protruding from his chest or shoulder, which he holds with his right hand. In the top right corner is a tiny bloodhound bounding down the slope. A pair of tall, slender trees divide the composition on the left. The overall impression is of greenness. The frame is of gilt softwood with an arched slip frame. It is plain with ribbon beading and leafy moulding along the outer edge.); © Manchester Art Gallery

The Outlaw, 1861

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas masterpiece by William Lindsay Windus. This exquisite print, measuring 36x34 cm, showcases a lush wooded landscape viewed from an elevated perspective. The scene unfolds with a sloped meadow adorned with dense woodland in the background, creating an enchanting backdrop for the unfolding drama. At the heart of this painting lies two hidden figures nestled within the scrub of the foreground. A woman dressed in Medieval-style attire cradles the head of an injured man with utmost tenderness and concern. With her left arm wrapped protectively around his head and her right arm supporting his back, she leans forward as if shielding him from harm. The injured man remains largely obscured by his companion; however, one cannot miss the arrow protruding from his chest or shoulder which he holds delicately with his right hand. Their poignant connection is intensified by their expressions - her face filled with apprehension while he endures both pain and resilience. Intriguingly positioned at the top right corner is a tiny bloodhound bounding down the slope, adding an element of movement to this otherwise serene setting. Two tall trees gracefully divide the composition on the left side, enhancing its visual balance. This mesmerizing artwork exudes a sense of greenness throughout its entirety - symbolizing life's vitality amidst adversity. Encased within a plain gilt softwood frame embellished with ribbon beading and leafy moulding along its outer edge, "The Outlaw" captivates viewers' imaginations and transports them into this evocative world created by Windus.
