EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a silver medal that commemorates the acquisition of Bombay on the marriage of King Charles II in 1670. Created by renowned artist John Roettiers, this commemorative medal is housed at the National Army Museum in London. The acquisition of Bombay by England occurred in 1668 as part of the marriage settlement between King Charles II and Portuguese Catherine of Braganza. Subsequently, Charles handed over control to the East India Company, providing them with a secure base on India's north-west coast compared to their leased factory in Surat. This decision proved pivotal as Bombay swiftly transformed into a bustling port, shipbuilding center, and prominent trading city. The intricately designed medal captures not only the historical significance but also reflects elements of artistry and royalty. It features an exquisite bust sculpture representing Asian ethnicity, symbolizing both India's rich cultural heritage and its connection to British imperialism during that era. With its profound symbolism and ideological undertones, this commemorative piece serves as a testament to history while honoring the union between two nations. The photograph beautifully captures every detail of this remarkable artwork from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection for all enthusiasts to admire and appreciate.
