The pugri or pagri is a form of headdress.
The United Provinces Light Horse was formed in 1904 from the amalgamation of the Allahabad Light Horse, the Cawnpore Light Horse, the Gorakhpur Light Horse, the Ghazipur Light Horse and the Oudh Light Horse.
The figure of the horsemen is similar to an equestrian statue of Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram (1803-1863) in Calcutta, sculpted by John Henry Foley. Outram distinguished himself in the operation to relieve the besieged city of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Pugri badge of the United Provinces Horse, dating back to 1904-1947. Crafted in silver, this exquisite plate badge features a horseman on a tablet with the battle honor "A Relief of Lucknow" above a scroll bearing the name of the auxiliary unit, "United Provinces Horse". The pugri or pagri, seen here as part of this headdress-inspired badge, adds an element of cultural significance to this artifact. The United Provinces Light Horse was formed by merging several light horse units including Allahabad Light Horse, Cawnpore Light Horse, Gorakhpur Light Horse, Ghazipur Light Horse and Oudh Light Horse. Interestingly enough, the figure depicted on this badge bears resemblance to Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram's equestrian statue in Calcutta. Sculpted by John Henry Foley himself, Outram played a pivotal role during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) when he led efforts to relieve Lucknow from its besieged state. This print not only captures an extraordinary piece from Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection but also offers us a glimpse into India's rich military heritage. It serves as a testament to bravery and valor displayed by those who served under the banner of United Provinces Horse during their years of existence.
