EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collar badge from the United Provinces Horse, dating back to the years 1904-1947. Crafted from white metal, this exquisite badge features a horseman on a tablet with the battle honour "A Relief of Lucknow" above a scroll bearing the name of the auxiliary unit - "United Provinces Horse". The United Provinces Light Horse was established in 1904 by merging several light horse regiments including Allahabad Light Horse, Cawnpore Light Horse, Gorakhpur Light Horse, Ghazipur Light Horse, and Oudh Light Horse. This particular collar badge pays homage to their distinguished service. Interestingly, the figure of the horseman depicted on this badge bears resemblance to Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram (1803-1863), as sculpted by John Henry Foley in Calcutta. Outram played an instrumental role during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) when he led operations to relieve Lucknow from its besieged state. Part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection at London's National Army Museum, this artifact not only represents historical significance but also exemplifies fine craftsmanship. Its intricate details and symbolic design make it a remarkable piece that captures both military history and artistic expression. This stunning print allows us to appreciate and delve into the rich heritage encapsulated within this collar badge from the United Provinces Horse.
