EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor print titled "The Green Market, Newcastle upon Tyne" by John Dobson takes us back to the bustling streets of 19th century England. The artwork showcases the vibrant atmosphere of a market day in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, capturing the essence of daily life during this era. In this scene, we are transported to the butcher market section of Dobson's markets for Richard Grainger. The artist skillfully portrays a lively marketplace filled with vendors and stalls selling various goods. The vaulted ceiling adds an air of grandeur to the space, while shops line the perimeter, offering a wide array of products. Dobson's attention to detail is evident as he depicts butchers proudly displaying their meat cuts and engaging in transactions with customers. This snapshot into history allows us to witness firsthand the buying and selling that took place within these markets. It is worth noting that this particular market was part of Richard Grainger's redevelopment plans for Grey Street. In order to proceed with his vision, Grainger agreed to provide a new market for the town after demolishing its predecessor. "The Green Market, Newcastle upon Tyne" serves as both a visual feast and historical document, transporting viewers back in time while highlighting an important chapter in urban development.
