EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pack animal trunk from the 2nd Afghan War, dating back to around 1879. Crafted with meticulous detail, this trunk is made of sturdy wood and covered in rich leather. It once belonged to the renowned 67th (the South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot, who played a significant role in Major-General Frederick Roberts' march from Kabul to Kandahar. The Controller General of Supply and Transport for the march described the challenging conditions faced by these brave soldiers as they traversed narrow pathways, steep terrains, and formidable mountain passes. The only reliable means of transport were these resilient pack animals. Despite the treacherous terrain and scorching temperatures, Roberts' men accomplished an astonishing feat by covering an impressive distance of 280 miles (400km) in just 20 days. Remarkably, they suffered minimal casualties during their journey. On September 1st, 1880, this valiant regiment emerged victorious when they defeated Ayub Khan outside Kandahar and successfully relieved the besieged garrison. This triumph stands as a testament to their unwavering determination and resilience. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this pack animal trunk serves as a tangible reminder of the challenges faced by soldiers during times of war. Its historical significance lies not only in its craftsmanship but also in its association with one of Britain's most remarkable military achievements.
