This image depicts the maidan at Sherpur cantonment outside Kabul during a durbar of chieftains from Logar province. After Major General Sir Frederick Roberts had occupied the Afghan capital in October 1879, the British met with many of the tribal leaders in order to win their support for a political settlement and negotiate peace terms.
