931475 Fiskenaes from the Governors House, illustration from The second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin... 1856 (engraving)
by Kane, Elisha (1820-57) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853 was an American effort, financed by Henry Grinnell, to determine the fate of the Franklins lost expedition. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane, the team explored areas northwest of Greenland, now called Grinnell Land. While failing to determine the fate of Sir John Franklin, the expedition set a new record for northward penetration, delineated 960 mi (1, 540 km) of unexplored coastline north of 82A latitude, and discovered the long-sought open Polar Sea. Kane collected valuable geographical, climate and magnetic observations before abandoning the brig Advance to the pack ice in 1855. While three members of the crew were lost, the epic journey of the survivors inspired the public as a vivid tale of Arctic survival.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Fiskenaes from the Governors House" is an illustration from The Second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, taken in 1856. The engraving, created by Elisha Kane and now part of a private collection, showcases the remarkable efforts made by this American expedition to uncover the fate of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane and financed by Henry Grinnell, the team ventured into uncharted territories northwest of Greenland, known today as Grinnell Land. Although they were unable to determine the fate of Sir John Franklin, their journey was not in vain. Setting a new record for northward penetration, they mapped approximately 960 miles (1,540 kilometers) of previously unexplored coastline beyond 82 degrees latitude. The most significant discovery made during this expedition was that of the long-sought open Polar Sea. This groundbreaking finding shed light on one of Earth's most enigmatic regions and provided valuable geographical insights. Despite facing immense challenges and losing three crew members along the way, the survivors' epic journey became an inspiration to many as a vivid tale of Arctic survival. Their resilience and determination captivated public imagination. This print serves as a testament to both the bravery exhibited by these explorers and their invaluable contributions to our understanding of polar exploration. It stands as a reminder that even amidst adversity, human curiosity knows no bounds when it comes to unraveling nature's mysteries.
