EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating miniature portrait on ivory depicts Captain Hugh Johnson, a distinguished member of the 26th Bengal Native Infantry in the mid-19th century. Painted by Jivan Ram, a renowned artist from Delhi, India, around 1840, this exquisite artwork now resides in the National Army Museum in London. Captain Hugh Johnson's military career spanned several significant events and postings. Joining as an ensign in March 1824, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant in 1825 and eventually attained the position of captain in 1837. Notably, he served at the Hissar Stud and played a crucial role within Shah Shujas army's Pay and Commissariat Department from 1838 to 1840. During his service years, Captain Johnson participated valiantly in the Battle of Ghazni during the First Afghan War (1838-1842). However, his life took an unexpected turn when he was taken hostage by Akbar Khan during the Kabul Insurrection on January 11th, 1842. Fortunately released later that year in September, Captain Johnson continued his dedicated service until retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1850. This remarkable portrait captures not only Captain Hugh Johnson's dignified presence but also serves as a testament to his bravery and commitment throughout his military career. It stands as a tribute to all those who have selflessly served their country with honor and valor.
