The Balla Hissar and City of Caubul [sic], from the Upper Part of the Citadel

5929500 A The Balla Hissar and City of Caubul [sic], from the Upper Part of the CitadelA (lithograph, tinted) by Atkinson, James (1780-1852) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: A The Balla Hissar and City of Caubul [sic], from the Upper Part of the CitadelA.
Tinted lithograph from bound volume of 26 tinted lithographs, Sketches in Afghanistan, 1838-1842, by Louis and Charles Haghe after James Atkinson, published by Henry Graves and Company and J W Allen and Company, 1 July 1842.
The ancient Bala Hissar fortress was located south of the city overlooking the houses and bazaars from a commanding height. After capturing Kabul and installing Shah Shuja as Emir in Augst 1839 the British had occupied the Bala Hissar, but in the months that followed they relocated to a defensively weak cantonment built to the north east of Kabul. Had they remained at the fortress the subsequent uprising may have been resisted.); eNational Army Museum; British, out of copyright

The Balla Hissar and City of Caubul, from the Upper Part of the Citadel

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating lithograph that offers a glimpse into the historical landscape of Kabul in the 19th century. Created by James Atkinson and reproduced by Louis and Charles Haghe, this tinted print showcases the ancient Bala Hissar fortress overlooking the bustling city below. The lithograph captures the strategic location of Bala Hissar, situated to the south of Kabul. From its commanding height, it provided an unparalleled view of houses and bazaars that sprawled across the landscape. In 1839, after successfully capturing Kabul and installing Shah Shuja as Emir, British forces occupied Bala Hissar before relocating to a less defensible cantonment northeast of Kabul. Had they remained at Bala Hissar, perhaps history would have taken a different turn. The subsequent uprising against British rule may have been met with greater resistance if they had maintained their stronghold within this formidable fortress. This print is part of a larger collection titled "Sketches in Afghanistan" which consists of 26 tinted lithographs depicting various scenes from Afghanistan between 1838 and 1842. Published by Henry Graves and Company along with J W Allen and Company in July 1842, these prints offer valuable insights into both Afghan architecture and British military presence during this period. Now housed at London's National Army Museum, this remarkable lithograph serves as an important visual record for historians studying Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage as well as its complex relationship with foreign powers throughout history.
