EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history, the Ms 365. Quintus Curtius Rufus, Historia Alexandri Magni manuscript from the 15th century in Florence. The illuminated initial on f. 1r immediately draws attention with its exquisite white vine-stem decoration and partial border that echoes the same intricate design found in the bas-de-page. A roundel for arms is left blank, leaving room for imagination and interpretation. The anonymous illuminator from Florence skillfully brought this manuscript to life during the third quarter of the 15th century, around 1450-1460. The scribe responsible for transcribing this historical account has been identified as Ormannus de Erfordia, active during a similar timeframe. With kind permission from the Earl of Leicester and Trustees of the Holkham Estate, we are fortunate to witness this masterpiece through Bridgeman Images' lens. The parchment material used adds an authentic touch to this fifteenth-century artifact. As we gaze upon this image, we cannot help but be transported back in time to a period filled with intellectual curiosity and artistic brilliance. It serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and how manuscripts like these played a crucial role in preserving knowledge throughout centuries. Let us cherish such treasures that bridge past and present while appreciating their beauty and significance within human history.
