The Cathedral and Bishops Palace Calcutta, 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph that takes us back to the vibrant city of Calcutta in the 19th century. The image showcases the magnificent Anglican cathedral of St. Paul's, designed by Major William Nairn Forbes and C. K. Robinson in the Gothic revival style. Completed in 1847, this architectural masterpiece stands tall with its intricate details and soaring spires. However, history has left its mark on this grand structure as well. Following the devastating earthquake of 1934, the tower had to be rebuilt. Adjacent to the cathedral, we catch a glimpse of the neo-classical Bishops Palace. This elegant building was purchased by Bishop Wilson in 1849 as a replacement for an earlier palace that had been used since 1825. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Samuel Bourne (1834-1912), renowned for his stunning photographs capturing various aspects of India during his time there. This particular print is part of an album containing 95 photographs taken by Bourne between 1865 and 1870. Now housed at London's National Army Museum, this photograph allows us to appreciate both the historical significance and architectural beauty of these iconic structures in Calcutta's landscape.
