EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the oil on canvas painting titled "CESAR CUI, 1890" by Ilya Efimovich Repin. Displayed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, this masterpiece depicts Cesar Cui, a renowned composer and influential Russian music critic of the late 19th century. Cui was not only a talented musician but also an advocate for promoting Russian music free from foreign influences. As the editor of the manifesto of the "Group of Five" he campaigned for compositions rooted in Russian folk traditions. Despite being a military engineer by profession, Cui's passion for music led him to become one of the prominent figures in his field. In this portrait, painted with meticulous detail and skillful brushstrokes, Repin captures Cui's essence as he poses confidently in his office wearing his general's uniform. The artist portrays him with an air of nonchalance and assuredness through his gaze. Repin himself frequently attended musical evenings hosted by Cui during the late 1880s. This connection between artist and subject adds depth to this stunning portrayal. The photograph beautifully captures every intricate detail of Repin's artwork while preserving its historical significance. It allows viewers to appreciate both the artistic mastery behind it and gain insight into one of Russia's great musicians who dedicated himself to preserving their cultural heritage through music composition.
