AKSELI GALLEN-KALLELA, 1920 (oil on canvas)
7215398 AKSELI GALLEN-KALLELA, 1920 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Ateneum Art Museum, Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki, Finland; (add.info.: 1920//Oil on canvas
In 1899, Repin published in the press a sharp criticism of one of the greatest Finnish painters of the time, Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931). Later, he completely changed his mind, sorry to have been so negative about him. The two men met in 1920. Gallen-Kallelas appearance is very pleasing to Repin, who recognizes in him " the face and temperament of a Zaporogue." The Finnish artist poses here wearing the brown uniform he wore during the Finnish civil war, in the camp of whites, opposed to the Reds. The portrait was made in a single session. Its unfinished appearance reinforces its expressiveness.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela in a powerful portrait painted by Ilya Efimovich Repin. Created in 1920, this oil on canvas artwork showcases Gallen-Kallela wearing his brown uniform from the Finnish civil war, where he fought for the Whites against the Reds. The unfinished appearance of the painting adds to its expressive nature, highlighting the intensity and rawness of Gallen-Kallela's character. Repin initially criticized Gallen-Kallela in 1899 but later regretted his negative stance when they finally met. In this portrait, Repin finds great pleasure in capturing what he describes as "the face and temperament of a Zaporogue" within Gallen-Kallela. The single-session creation process further emphasizes the spontaneity and authenticity captured within this remarkable piece. The photograph itself is expertly taken by Sylvain Collet, showcasing every intricate detail of this masterpiece held at Ateneum Art Museum, part of the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki. Bridgeman Images has flawlessly reproduced this image with their usual finesse and attention to detail. This print not only serves as a testament to two influential artists coming together but also provides a glimpse into Finland's history during that tumultuous period. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both Repin's artistic prowess and Gallen-Kallela's significant contribution to Finnish artistry while donning his military attire—a symbol of strength and resilience amidst conflict.
