This print captures a significant moment in history, depicting Alphonse Baudin on the barricade of Faubourg Saint-Antoine on December 3,1851. Painted by Ernest Louis Pichio in 1869, this oil on canvas artwork measures 55.5x80 cm and is housed at the Musee de la Ville de Paris, Musee Carnavalet. During the insurrectional movement triggered by a coup d'état, workers from rue Sainte-Marguerite erected this barricade with the support of several deputies including Pierre Malardier and Baudin himself. Baudin served as a representative for Ain in the Legislative Assembly of 1849. The painting showcases a crowd scene filled with people passionately engaged in political reform and rebellion against oppressive forces. Amongst them stands Alphonse Baudin, an emblematic figure embodying courage and determination. In addition to capturing the intensity of this historic event, Pichio's painting also portrays elements that add depth to its narrative. A dog can be seen near the barricade, symbolizing loyalty and companionship amidst chaos. The vibrant colors used by Pichio bring life to the scene while highlighting emotions running high during this tumultuous period. This artwork serves as both a visual representation of France's revolutionary past and an homage to those who fought for justice and freedom during challenging times. It reminds us of our shared history while inspiring reflection on themes such as politics, revolt, uprising, and social change.
