A Sacrifice in a Confucian Temple (litho)

8661062 A Sacrifice in a Confucian Temple (litho) by Wright, Henry Charles Seppings (1850-1937); Private Collection; (add.info.: A Sacrifice in a Confucian Temple. Under the Liang Dynasty, Confucian Temples were definitely established. The worship of the sage had been carried out previously in a more or less intermittent fashion, and in the fourth century a shrine had been built in his honour; but it was not until AD 505 that the first Confucian Temple was erected for the sacrifice of animals - the ox, sheep and pig; for musical rites with dancing, and for the display of a portrait of Confucius, for which under the Mings a wooden tablet was substituted.
