Photograph, India, 1857 circa.
Dighton MacNaghten Probyn (1833-1924) began his career with 2nd Punjab Cavalry, serving for five years in operations on the Trans-Indus frontier before his outstanding service in the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). In 1858, he was appointed to command 1st Regiment of Sikh Irregular Cavalry. This became 11th Bengal Cavalry in 1861. Although Probyn gave up command of the regiment in 1866, a year later he sat to Swinton for his portrait in this uniform, an indication of his pride in the regiment. Probyn served in the 2nd China War (1857-1860), and went on to receive a number of honours and awards, becoming a General in 1888 and a Privy Counsellor in 1901. He served for 54 years in the Royal Households of King Edward VII, King George V and Queen Alexandra, and died in 1924 at the age of 91.
In 1904 when Probyn was appointed Honorary Colonel of his former regiment, it became 11th Prince of WalesAs Own Lancers (ProbynAs Horse). After Partition in 1947, it was assigned to the Army of Pakistan as ProbynAs Horse (5th King Edward VIIAs Own Lancers). Since 1956, when Pakistan became a republic, ProbynAs name has remained only on its badge.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Dighton Probyn, a distinguished member of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry in India during the mid-19th century. Dressed in traditional Indian attire, Probyn's commanding presence is evident as he poses for this portrait. Born in 1833, Probyn embarked on a remarkable military career that spanned over five decades. He first served with the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, participating in operations along the Trans-Indus frontier before becoming an integral figure during the Indian Mutiny from 1857 to 1859. His exceptional bravery and audacity led to him being mentioned in despatches seven times and ultimately awarded the Victoria Cross. In subsequent years, Probyn assumed command of various cavalry regiments and played significant roles in conflicts such as the Second China War (1857-1860). Throughout his long service to King Edward VII, King George V, and Queen Alexandra's Royal Households, he received numerous honors and awards. The photograph was taken around 1867 by an unknown photographer but has since become part of London's National Army Museum collection. It is believed that General Sir Sam Browne VC owned this album previously. Probyn's legacy lives on through his former regiment which became known as "11th Prince of Wales' Own Lancers (Probyn's Horse)" when he was appointed Honorary Colonel in 1904. Following Partition in 1947, it joined Pakistan's army as "Probyn's Horse (5th King Edward VII’s Own Lancers)". Although Pakistan became a republic in 1956, Probyn’s name remains proudly displayed on its badge today. This image serves not only as a testament to Dighton MacNaghten Probyn’s remarkable military achievements but also highlights his enduring impact on history.
