EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Villageoise se rendant au bal" takes us back to a bygone era. Illustrated by the talented JJ Granville (also known as J. J. Grandville), this engraving is part of a series called "Scenes de la vie privee et publique des animaux" (Scenes from the private and public life of animals). The scene depicts a village woman on her way to a ball, exuding elegance and grace in her attire. Her dress flows gracefully around her as she walks with purpose towards the festivities that await her. The intricate details captured by Granville's skilled hand bring this moment to life, showcasing his mastery in capturing human emotions through animal characters. The print is signed by Caque, who engraved it for the section entitled "L'ours ou Lettre ecrite de la montagne" (The bear or Letter written from the mountain) written by L. Baude. Published in 1842 under the direction of P. -J. Stahl (the pseudonym of Pierre-Jules Hetzel), these contemporary studies shed light on societal customs and behaviors during that time. Preserved within a private collection, this photograph taken by Jean Duvallon allows us to appreciate not only Granville's artistry but also provides insight into historical mores and cultural practices prevalent in 19th-century France. A true gem for any art enthusiast or history lover alike!
