Strandleben / Beach Life (colour litho)

8666315 Strandleben / Beach Life (colour litho) by German School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Strandleben. Translation: Beach Life. It was not until the 19th century that people learned to appreciate the invigorating effect of sea bathing, and a bathing life developed that, due to its prudery, seems quite ridiculous. Out of false shame, people went into the water in high-necked costumes and let neither air nor sun on their bodies. In the North Sea bathers, people bathed from bathing carts that were pulled into the sea by horses. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the essence of Strandleben, or Beach Life, in the 19th century. The image depicts a scene where people are enjoying the seaside in their high-necked costumes, reflecting the prudish attitudes of the time towards exposing skin to sunlight and fresh air. In this era, sea bathing was considered to have invigorating effects on health, but social norms dictated that bathers maintain modesty by covering up their bodies. As a result, beachgoers would enter the water fully clothed and shielded from both sun and air. The illustration also highlights a unique aspect of North Sea bathing culture - bathing carts pulled into the sea by horses. This method allowed bathers to immerse themselves in the ocean while maintaining a sense of privacy and decorum. Despite its comical portrayal of outdated customs and beliefs surrounding beach etiquette, this print serves as a fascinating glimpse into historical attitudes towards leisure activities and health practices at the seaside. It reminds us how societal norms evolve over time and how our perceptions of what is acceptable can drastically change from one generation to another.
