EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable collar badge from the United Provinces Horse, dating back to 1904-1947. Crafted with sterling silver and gilt by renowned manufacturer J R Gaunt and Son, this exquisite piece features a horseman on a tablet adorned with the battle honor "A Relief of Lucknow". Above it rests a scroll bearing the name of the auxiliary unit - "United Provinces Horse". The United Provinces Light Horse was established in 1904 through the amalgamation of several light horse units including Allahabad, Cawnpore, Gorakhpur, Ghazipur, and Oudh. The design of the horsemen depicted on this badge bears resemblance to an equestrian statue sculpted by John Henry Foley in Calcutta. This statue immortalizes Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram, who played a pivotal role during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) in relieving the besieged city of Lucknow. Part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection at London's National Army Museum, this collar badge is not only an emblematic representation but also holds historical significance. Its intricate details and fine craftsmanship make it an exceptional addition to any collection or display. Through this photograph captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, viewers can appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and its connection to India's rich military history.
