EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Roller", takes us back to the 18th century and showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards. Originally engraved by Edwards himself, this print is a collaboration with Michael Seligmann, a talented German engraver and art dealer. "The Roller" is part of Edwards' renowned works, A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History. However, Seligmann's re-engraving breathes new life into these plates by combining them with Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. In this unique fusion, Seligmann translates names into German while adding additional figures and plants not present in the original works. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported to a world where nature unfolds before our eyes. The vibrant colours bring out every intricate detail of this magnificent bird known as Garrulus argentoratensis or Die Mandelkrähe in German. Its feathers shimmer with shades of blue and green against a backdrop that hints at its natural habitat. "The Roller" serves as a testament to both artistic talent and scientific curiosity during an era when exploration was paramount. This enchanting illustration invites us to appreciate the beauty found within nature's diverse creations – birds that captivate our imagination through their elegance and grace. Displayed proudly in private collections worldwide, this print continues to inspire awe for its historical significance as well as its aesthetic appeal.
