EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Great Spotted Lizard with a forked Tail" transports us back to the 18th century when natural history illustrations were highly sought after. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print showcases the collaboration of two talented artists. Originally featured in Edwards' renowned works, "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History". Seligmann took on the task of re-engraving the plates. He combined Edwards' work with Mark Catesby's masterpiece, "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". The result is a harmonious blend that seamlessly translates names into German while adding new figures and plants not present in the originals. In this particular engraving, we are presented with an exquisite depiction of a large spotted lizard with a distinctive forked tail. Its vibrant colors and intricate details bring this creature to life on paper. As we observe its textured scales and piercing eyes, we can't help but marvel at nature's diversity. This print serves as a testament to the dedication and skill required for scientific illustration during that era. It offers us a glimpse into both historical scientific knowledge and artistic craftsmanship. Whether you are an enthusiast of reptiles or simply appreciate fine art, this remarkable piece will surely captivate your imagination.
