EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The brown Curlew, 1749-73" transports us back to the 18th century, showcasing the exquisite artistry of Mark Catesby and Michael Seligmann. The image depicts a majestic brown curlew, gracefully perched on a branch amidst a lush natural setting. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann. Combining Edwards' plates with Catesby's work from "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann adds his own touch by translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. The attention to detail is truly remarkable; every feather on the curlew's body is meticulously rendered, capturing its distinctive markings and elegant form. The vibrant colours bring life to the scene, making it feel as though we are witnessing this beautiful bird in its natural habitat. "The brown Curlew" serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific exploration during this era of discovery. It offers us an opportunity to appreciate nature's wonders through the lens of these talented illustrators. This print is not only a visual delight but also a valuable historical artifact that reminds us of our enduring fascination with birds, animals, and our planet's rich natural history.
