EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Brasilian Saw-billed Roller, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann, who combined it with Catesby's work on the natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. The image depicts a striking bird known as the Brasilian Saw-billed Roller or Garrulus Brasiliensis rostro serrato. With its vibrant plumage and distinctive saw-like beak, this avian beauty stands out against a backdrop of lush foliage. The attention to detail in both the bird's features and surrounding plants is testament to the skillful craftsmanship of these talented artists. Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg, not only translated names into German but also added additional figures and plants that were absent in the original works. This collaboration between two artistic minds resulted in an extraordinary fusion of nature's wonders. Displayed here is a print from a private collection published by ePurix Verlag Volker Christen. Its inclusion in Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate not only the aesthetic appeal but also delve into its historical significance within the realm of natural history illustration. This enchanting piece serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring fascination with capturing nature's beauty through art while simultaneously expanding our understanding of exotic species found across different continents.
