Apollo and Daphne, c. 1700 (terracotta)

500169 Apollo and Daphne, c.1700 (terracotta)
by Soldani, Massimiliano Benzi (1658-1740); 55.5x34.2x21.9 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Apollo, the Greek and Roman god of the sun and the arts, fell in love with the nymph Daphne. Chased to a riverbank, Daphne prayed to her father, the river god, Peneus, for help. At the moment Apollo reached out to touch her, she transformed into a laurel tree, branches and roots sprouting from her body. This work reveals key preoccupations of artists working in Italy in the 1600s: novel, active compositions; fleeting moments; and transformation from one physical form into another. Soldani based this work on a large-scale marble sculpture from 1622-25 by the Roman artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This terracotta print titled "Apollo and Daphne" by Massimiliano Benzi Soldani depicts a profound moment in Greek mythology. The Greek and Roman god of the sun and arts, Apollo, finds himself enamored with the beautiful nymph Daphne. However, as he pursues her relentlessly to a riverbank, Daphne seeks help from her father, the river god Peneus. In an act of divine intervention, at the very moment Apollo reaches out to touch her, she undergoes a remarkable transformation into a laurel tree. This artwork not only showcases Soldani's exceptional skill but also reflects significant themes prevalent among Italian artists during the 17th century. The composition is dynamic and full of movement while capturing a fleeting moment frozen in time. It explores the concept of metamorphosis as Daphne changes form from human to botanical entity. Soldani drew inspiration for this piece from Gian Lorenzo Bernini's monumental marble sculpture created between 1622-25. By reimagining it in terracotta medium, Soldani adds his own unique interpretation to this timeless tale. The intricate details within this sculpture are awe-inspiring – every branch and root sprouting from Daphne's transformed body is meticulously crafted. Cupids or cherubs surround Apollo and add an ethereal quality to the scene. Now housed at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its evocative portrayal of love lost amidst divine intervention.
