Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "The Scullery, from the series 'All the best people drink Milk'" transports viewers to a bygone era. Created by an English School artist in the 20th century, this colour litho artwork is housed at the prestigious Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Part of a larger collection commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB), this particular piece was printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode for HMSO. The EMB's mission was to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. This poster campaign aimed to instill an Empire-conscious consumer mindset among Britons. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 artist-designed posters from this period during the 1930s. These powerful images depict various aspects of life within the Empire, showcasing its diverse people, places, and products. However, when viewed through a contemporary lens, these posters can also raise uncomfortable questions about the legacies of colonialism. "The Scullery" offers a glimpse into everyday life during that time period. With its vivid colors and attention to detail, it captures both nostalgia and curiosity. As we admire this artwork today, it serves as a reminder of how historical perspectives evolve over time while encouraging us to reflect on our own relationship with past empires. This print is part of Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection and is proudly displayed at Manchester Art Gallery under their copyright protection.
