EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Design for the Elephant Fountain at the Place de la Bastille" a remarkable creation by Jean Antoine Alavoine. The image depicts a colored engraving of this grand design, which was intended to grace the streets of Paris in 1813-14. Planned under Napoleon Bonaparte's reign, this monumental statue never came to fruition beyond its full-scale model made from wood and plaster. Standing an impressive 24 meters high, it would have been an awe-inspiring sight for all who passed by. Unfortunately, due to various circumstances, it was sold and removed in 1847. The intricately detailed gold drapery adorning the elephant adds a touch of opulence to this ambitious project. Every aspect of this empire-style fountain exudes elegance and grandeur – from its ornate decorations to the majestic houdah (or howdah) on top where riders could have enjoyed commanding views over Paris. Alavoine's engraving beautifully captures every decorative element and ornamental detail envisioned for this magnificent structure. It serves as a testament to both his artistic prowess and Napoleon's ambitious vision for transforming public spaces in France. Today, although only existing through historical records like this print, we can still marvel at the sheer creativity behind such an extraordinary endeavor that never came into being.
