EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolitho print showcases the remarkable objects discovered in the tomb of Childeric I at Tournay. Dating back to the 5th century, these artifacts provide a fascinating glimpse into the life and culture of this ancient Frankish king. The intricate illustration, created by a French School artist in the 19th century, captures the essence of this historical find. The treasure was unearthed in 1653 and mistakenly dated as 1656 here. It was later revealed that Childeric I reigned from 426 to 491 AD. Amongst the treasures depicted are an array of weapons, coins, and bees. The bees were particularly intriguing as they were believed to have adorned horse harnesses during that era. Their significance extended beyond mere decoration when Emperor Napoleon I adopted them as a symbolic emblem for his dynasty, connecting it with France's origins and the Merovingian dynasty. After its discovery, King Louis XIV acquired these precious artifacts in 1665 and housed them within his Cabinet de medailles at Bibliotheque nationale de France. Unfortunately, some pieces were stolen during political unrest in 1831 but were partially recovered from the depths of River Seine. This stunning print not only offers us a visual representation of these historic relics but also serves as a reminder of our connection to past civilizations through art and archaeology.
