Sea Adventure: The spotting tripods (colour litho)
8668769 Sea Adventure: The spotting tripods (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The spotting tripods. When the British ships bombarded the German positions on the Belgian coast during the Great War of 1914-18, "spotting" the fall of shells was most important in order to ensure accuracy. Aircraft were shot down, and the ships were too far away for direct observation, so it was determined to use observation posts so small as not easily to be noticed. Iron tripods with searchlights for signalling were taken close to the coast at night, and dropped in the shallows with only the observer's tiny platform above water. Although drifters were assigned to rescue the tripod crews if necessary, the work was, of course, extremely hazardous. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph captures a moment of daring sea adventure during the Great War of 1914-18. The image depicts the spotting tripods used by British ships to accurately bombard German positions on the Belgian coast. In order to ensure precision in their attacks, these iron tripods with searchlights were strategically placed close to the coast at night, with only a tiny observer's platform above water.
The importance of spotting the fall of shells cannot be overstated, as aircraft were shot down and ships were too far away for direct observation. Despite being assigned drifters for rescue if necessary, the work was incredibly hazardous for those manning these observation posts.
This illustration is part of a set of 50 cigarette cards on Sea Adventure issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939. It offers a glimpse into the bravery and ingenuity displayed during wartime naval operations. The vivid colours and detailed depiction bring this historical moment to life, highlighting both the danger and determination faced by those involved in this crucial aspect of maritime warfare.
