EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the iconic sculpture "Rooster (Gallic Cock), 1916" by Pierre-Maurice-Raymond Duchamp-Villon. A pioneer of Cubist sculpture, Duchamp-Villon created the original plaster relief while serving in the army during World War I. The artwork was initially intended for the entrance to a temporary theater near the front lines, where French soldiers would have recognized its symbolism of victory through the rooster and rising sun. Tragically, Duchamp-Villon lost his life during the war. However, in 1919, five bronze casts were made from his plaster as a memorial to honor his artistic legacy. This particular painted bronze cast measures 43.5x36x5.5 cm and is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The image captures both the intricate details and dynamic composition of this cubist masterpiece. The golden hues accentuate its significance as a symbol of dawn and triumph amidst conflict. With its sharp angles and fragmented forms characteristic of Cubism, this artwork represents an innovative approach to sculptural representation. As we admire this remarkable piece from Duchamp-Villon's oeuvre, we are reminded not only of his artistic talent but also of the profound impact that World War I had on artists during that era. Through this photograph print, we can appreciate how art continues to serve as a powerful medium for expressing emotions and commemorating historical events like never before.
