7152635 Riot at William Is Coronation, 1066 (litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Riot at William Is Coronation, 1066. On Christmas Day, 1066, the Norman William the Conqueror was crowned beside the grave of Edward the Confessor, in Westminster Abbey, by the Norman Bishop of Coutances and the Saxon Archbishop of York. In accordance with Saxon custom the multitude in the church acclaimed the new king with loud shouts. The Norman soldiery on guard outside the Minster, taking alarm, set fire to the thatched buildings in the neighbourhood. The crowd within the building rushed out in alarm, and the clergy, left alone with the king, who was " trembling from head to foot, " hurriedly completed the remainder of the ceremony, omitting the sacrament. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Riot at William Is Coronation, 1066" depicts a dramatic scene from history. The image transports us back to Christmas Day in the year 1066 when the Norman conqueror, William the Conqueror, was crowned beside Edward the Confessor's grave in Westminster Abbey. In accordance with Saxon tradition, a jubilant crowd filled the church and enthusiastically hailed their new king with resounding cheers. However, outside the Minster walls, chaos erupted as alarmed Norman soldiers set fire to nearby thatched buildings. Startled by this sudden commotion, those inside rushed out of the building in panic. Amidst this turmoil stood King William himself - trembling from head to foot - accompanied only by clergy members who hurriedly completed his coronation ceremony without performing the sacrament. This poignant moment captures both the triumph of William's ascension and the fear that gripped him during these uncertain times. Illustrated for a set of historical London cards issued by Hignetts Cigarettes in 1926, this artwork showcases not only an important event but also provides a glimpse into early twentieth-century England. The detailed depiction of thatched roofs and architectural elements adds authenticity to this powerful visual narrative. With its rich historical significance and masterful execution through lithography technique, this print serves as a testament to human resilience amidst tumultuous times throughout history.
