The Riot in Trafalgar Square, 13 November 1887

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a pivotal moment in British history, reflecting the social unrest and class struggle of the time. This powerful engraving, created by an anonymous English School artist from the 19th century, depicts a chaotic scene that unfolded during The Long Depression. The image portrays Trafalgar Square as a battleground where working-class demonstrators clashed with authorities. Over 30,000 individuals encircled the square while at least 10,000 protesters marched towards it from various directions. Led by influential figures such as Elizabeth Reynolds, John Burns, William Morris, Annie Besant, and Robert Cunninghame-Graham of the Social Democratic Federation, these activists sought to highlight the dire conditions faced by unemployed workers in London's East End. Among those marching was also George Bernard Shaw—a renowned Fabian playwright who lent his voice to this cause. To maintain order amidst mounting tensions, around 2,000 police officers and 400 troops were deployed. This historic event marked a significant turning point in Britain's socio-political landscape—an embodiment of simmering discontent among marginalized communities against an upper-class establishment. By capturing this tumultuous moment through their engravings for The Graphic newspaper on November 19th of that year; artists aimed to shed light on the struggles faced by ordinary people during this era of economic hardship. Today, "The Riot in Trafalgar Square" serves as a poignant reminder of past struggles and continues to inspire conversations about inequality and social justice.
