EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases Benjamin Duterrau's "Portrait of an artist (self portrait), 1819". Painted with oil on canvas, this masterpiece measures 76.7x64.2 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The painting bears the artist's initials and an indistinct date of B. D. 181, along with an exhibition number pasted on the lower left corner. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819, this previously unpublished artwork has remained within the artist's family until now. It is also Duterrau's earliest self-portrait out of his three surviving works, depicting him at the age of 52. The other two self-portraits were painted much later during his time in Van Diemens Land (now Tasmania). One was sold at Christies Sydney auction in October 1974, while the other can be found at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart. In these later portraits, Duterrau is shown as a man in his late sixties holding a portfolio of engravings that includes Raffaelles Cartoon and School of Athens. The portfolio symbolizes Duterrau's mission to promote art and its civilizing influence within the colony. He delivered a series of lectures on the theme of School of Athens at Hobart Town Mechanics Institute throughout the 1830s and 1840s. This remarkable photograph by Bridgeman Images captures not only Duterrau's artistic talent but also provides insight into his dedication to promoting art as a means for societal advancement.
