The volunteer Yeomanry cavalry units were originally formed in the 1790s as a response to the invasion threat from Revolutionary France. However, they were also used to support the civil authority to put down political and social disturbances. This continued until the mid-19th century when police forces took over this role. The yeomanry then concentrated on local defence.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases an Officers shako from the Gloucestershire Yeomanry, dating back to approximately 1848. The shako, a distinctive military headgear worn by officers during that era, is beautifully preserved in this print. The Gloucestershire Yeomanry was part of the volunteer cavalry units established in the late 18th century as a response to the threat of invasion from Revolutionary France. However, their role extended beyond national defense; they were also called upon to assist civil authorities in maintaining order during times of political and social unrest. As police forces emerged and took over this responsibility in the mid-19th century, the yeomanry shifted their focus towards local defense efforts. This photograph offers a glimpse into a significant period in British history when citizen soldiers played an essential role both on domestic soil and potentially abroad. The attention to detail captured by the anonymous British School photographer highlights not only the craftsmanship of military attire but also serves as a reminder of how societal needs evolve over time. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this image allows us to appreciate the dedication and sacrifice made by officers like those represented here. It stands as a testament to their commitment to safeguarding their communities while showcasing an important artifact from our past.
