EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic siege of Lucknow during the Cipayes revolt against British power in India from 1857 to 1858. The image showcases the intensity and turmoil of this major engagement, which was part of a larger uprising against British rule. For 87 long days, Lucknow found itself surrounded by mutineers who sought to overthrow their colonial oppressors. However, hope arrived when General Sir Henry Havelock led a courageous column that broke through on September 25th, 1857. Despite their valiant efforts, Havelock's forces were unable to fully break the siege. Lucknow remained trapped until November 25th, when another larger force commanded by General Sir Colin Campbell finally came to its rescue. This momentous relief marked a turning point in the rebellion against British authority. The photograph provides us with a glimpse into this tumultuous period in Indian history. It serves as a reminder of the bravery and resilience displayed by both sides during this conflict for independence. Preserved within a private collection, this artwork by Stefano Bianchetti allows us to reflect upon an important chapter in India's struggle for freedom from colonial rule. As we observe this historical print, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the courage and determination exhibited during Lucknow's siege and ultimate liberation.
