Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "The Buttery, from the series 'All the best people drink Milk'" is a remarkable piece of art that captures the essence of British culture in the early 20th century. Created by an English School artist, this colour litho print is housed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Part of a larger collection commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this artwork was designed to promote Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain and its colonies. The poster campaign aimed to transform Britons into conscious consumers who supported products from their own empire. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 posters from this iconic series during the 1930s. These visually striking images showcase various aspects of life within the empire, including its people, places, and products. However, for today's audience, these posters also raise thought-provoking questions about the legacy of colonialism and its impact on contemporary society. "The Buttery" specifically portrays a scene where individuals are enjoying milk – symbolizing purity and health – in a charming buttery setting. This image evokes nostalgia for a bygone era while simultaneously inviting us to reflect on our relationship with history. As we admire this exquisite print captured by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Manchester Art Gallery, let us appreciate both its artistic beauty and recognize how it encourages us to engage with complex narratives surrounding imperialism's lasting effects.
