EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the south front of Dropmore, a once magnificent country house that now stands as a haunting reminder of England's lost architectural treasures. Taken from Giles Worsley's renowned book "England's Lost Houses" this print showcases the grandeur and elegance of 18th-century Georgian architecture. Built between 1792 and 1794 by Samuel Wyatt for Lord Grenville, the Prime Minister at the time, Dropmore was an exquisite example of neoclassical design. The addition of a third bay in the early 20th century by Detmar Blow added to its allure. However, tragedy struck in 1990 when fire ravaged this historic villa, leaving only ruins behind. In this image, we see the exterior view adorned with bow windows and covered in lush greenery. A creeper gracefully climbs up trellises, adding a touch of natural beauty to the scene. The photographer skillfully captures both the grand scale of Dropmore and its delicate details. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded not only of England's architectural heritage but also of its impermanence. It serves as a poignant tribute to what once stood proudly on these grounds—a testament to human creativity and craftsmanship that has been lost to time.
