EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - "The 36-line Bible, printed by Gutenberg (vellum)". Created by the German School in the 19th century, this image captures a facsimile page from the famous Bible housed at Greifswald Universitaet in Germany. Also known as the "Bamberg Bible" and sometimes referred to as a "Gutenberg Bible", this edition is considered to be the second printed version of the Bible after Johannes Gutenberg's groundbreaking work. It is believed to have been produced in Bamberg, Germany around 1458-60. Although no printer's name appears within its pages, it is widely speculated that Gutenberg himself may have been responsible for its creation. What sets this particular edition apart is its distinctive feature - each page contains precisely 36 lines of text. This characteristic gives it its name and distinguishes it from another notable printing, known as the Gutenberg Bible or 42-line Bible. The photograph beautifully captures not only the intricate details of this historical manuscript but also highlights its ornate decorations and illuminated borders. The delicate craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail make it an exquisite example of biblical artistry. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness one of humanity's greatest achievements - the birth of printing press technology and its profound impact on religious texts like these.
