EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print from 1796 depicts a recruitment poster for the Royal Navy during 'The War of Captain Jenkins' ear'. The image features three men, presumably seamen or landmen, wanted for service in his Majesty's Navy. The poster appeals to "True-Born BRITISH TARs" to seize the opportunity and volunteer before the deadline on December 14th.
The text on the poster promises handsome bounties, monthly pay for families and friends of volunteers, as well as a generous supply of clothing, beef, grog, flip, and strong beer. Volunteers are assured of prize money from capturing Spanish galleons loaded with dollars and honors. The enthusiastic call of "HUZZA!!!" adds an air of excitement and adventure to the recruitment drive.
The names John Swinglehurst, Thos Dewhurst, and James Higgs are listed as contacts for those interested in signing up. This historical document provides a fascinating glimpse into the methods used to recruit sailors for naval service during times of conflict. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals who answered their country's call to serve at sea.
