Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Scottish Oat Harvest" is part of the remarkable series called Home Countries First. Created by George Houston, a renowned artist from 1869 to 1947, this color lithograph showcases the beauty and significance of oat harvesting in Scotland. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by McCorquodale & Company Ltd for HMSO, this artwork holds historical value as it was intended to promote sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. Manchester Art Gallery proudly houses an intriguing collection of artist-designed posters from this campaign. With over 200 posters acquired in the 1930s, these powerful images depict various aspects of the British Empire's people, places, and products. However, they also raise thought-provoking questions about the legacies left behind by the Empire today. This particular print captures a moment during Scottish oat harvest—a vital agricultural practice that sustained communities across Scotland. The image portrays hardworking farmers laboring amidst vast fields filled with golden oats ready for reaping. It offers viewers a glimpse into rural life in Scotland while celebrating their rich farming traditions. As we admire this stunning piece from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection at Manchester Art Gallery, let us appreciate not only its artistic merit but also reflect on how it symbolizes both our shared history and ongoing discussions surrounding colonialism's impact on society today.
