EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Pope Julius II, who reigned from 1503 to 1513. The image depicts a fresco by the renowned artist Raphael, capturing the pope in all his regal splendor. Pope Julius II is depicted wearing a scarlet mozzetta draped over his shoulders, which contrasts beautifully with the white surplice and cream cassock he adorns. Handcolored by the talented E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, this illustration exudes an air of elegance and sophistication that was characteristic of the period it portrays. The artwork comes from Georges Duplessis' book titled "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867 as a continuation of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's series on costumes from earlier centuries. Georges Duplessis himself served as curator of prints at Bibliotheque nationale while Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was not only an accomplished artist but also a book illustrator and interior designer for various public buildings and churches. With its rich historical significance captured through meticulous detail, this print offers viewers a glimpse into both artistry and papal history alike.
